If you have decided to work from home, you might be in the market for office furniture. Maybe your home office will also double as a guest room. If so, shop for your new office furniture with that in mind. Either way, you'll need to decide the mood you want to establish in your home office.
If you want an elegant look, pale green, soft blue or off-white wooden furniture would be a good choice. Choose a set that includes a desk with a hutch above it, a floor-to-ceiling wall shelf and a cabinet that has doors and a bottom drawer as the design. Think of buying a living room style chair to go with the desk. If there is a bed in the room, having a chest at the end of the bed will give you storage space for things like computer paper and other office essentials.
Maybe you would prefer a contemporary mood in your home office. If that's the case, go with black or dark grey metal for the furniture. An L-shaped desk with an extended table will give you space for your computer and to do paperwork. Choose a design that has a filing cabinet and shelving to create a unit. If you go with black metal, think of choosing a gray metal chair, or vice versa. Choosing a contrasting color for the chair will add interest to the room.
Perhaps you like the look of rustic furniture. If that's the case, go with an antique roll top desk, or at least an antique reproduction desk. Choose a wooden swivel chair with a barrel back. Shelves made of reclaimed with and an oak filing cabinet would be a nice addition. Check out resale shops and antique stores for the items you will need for furniture for your rustic home office.
Maybe you have very limited space in your home office. If so, buy a small table for your computer with an open space at the bottom. Slide a cabinet and a small chair under the table and place another smaller table next to the computer table. Use a small chest of drawers for storage and for filing. Select a portable wooden chair that can easily be taken down or moved to another area of the room.
If there is enough space, buy additional chairs that you can use when customers or others come to your home office. Select chairs that complement the office furniture that you buy.
